What to Wear to the Night For The Arts Kentucky Derby Themed Gala

We’re chomping at the bit!

The Night For The Arts Kentucky Derby is this Saturday and we couldn’t be more excited!

The Kentucky Derby appeals to the masses because of its reputation as a sports party celebrating spring fashion.  So, what to wear to the “Two Most Exciting Minutes In Sports”?

redhatWomen:

Women typically wear dresses, bold separates, or pastel colored suits- don’t hold back!

Dress: The Derby usually recommends a simple dress, so it doesn’t pull focus from your hat. Wear a dress that’s full of color or a spring pattern. A Night For The Arts Kentucky Derby themed Gala will be held at the Crow River Golf Club on March 5th, women may want to layer their dress with a jean jacket as Minnesota weather is hard to predict. A coat check will be available for your convenience.

Shoes: Pull your outfit together with a spring flat or sandal.

Jewelry: The Hat is the focus of your outfit during the Night For The Arts Kentucky Derby Gala. If possible, try not to pull focus with large statement jewelry.

Hats: There are no rules when it comes to choosing your hat for the Night For The Arts Kentucky Derby themed Gala! Let your Southern Belle shine! Hats can be decorated with flowers, feathers, ribbons, bows, or anything that allows your individual creativity to shine. Fascinators are a newer style making a statement on derby day. It’s a smaller stylish headpiece attached via headpiece or comb- a great way to avoid hat hair! A Hat contest at the Gala will allow one lucky attendee bragging rights to the “Best Hat” award for the evening.

Which comes first? The Hat or the Dress? It’s up to you! If you’re designing or creating your hat, perhaps you’d like to use inspiration from an existing dress that makes you feel fabulous; or you’ve created a truly one of a kind masterpiece that needs a dress of its own.

Where to look? Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop on Main Street, Goodwill, and your own closet are great places to start looking for hats!d.8

Men:

Men have just as much as an excuse as the women to dress up. With an extensive color palette to choose from, you will be looking fresh all evening!

Pants: White, tan and khaki are typical, but don’t be afraid to go bright! A green, pink or yellow paired with the right shirt or blazer are sure to make you stand out.

Shirts: You now have your pant. Have fun picking out a shirt to match. If you play it safe year round, this is the one day you can really let loose. A shirt in a complimentary color or stripes will make a perfect Derby Day Look. A classic navy or black blazer is always a stylish choice for a gentleman.

Bowties: Complete your Derby style with a bowtie!

Hat: Yes, fellas, you can wear a hat too! Choose a fedora or a bowler. They are usually a solid color and reflect a 1920’s style.
