What are some benefits of being a partner organization with the Hutchinson Center for the Arts?
The HCA provides a great opportunity to meet other arts-minded people and promote each other’s organizations. For the past two years, we have served at the Hutchinson Theatre Company’s dinner theater production at the Crow River Winery. We hope to collaborate on a concert with the Crow River Singers in the future.
Rehearsals start on Jan. 28th, what does the Spring Season look like for the Litchfield Area Male Chorus?
Our main focus is our spring concert (tentatively planned for May 14, details TBA). We are also going to sing at Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel on March 13, a concert in the park in Paynesville in June, and other opportunities as they arise. In addition to singing, we gather for a picnic in May for the guys and their wives to socialize.
Looking further ahead, LAMC has a long history of traveling out of state every couple of years. We are currently discussing the next trip with Cuba on the short list of potential destinations.
How does LAMC promote the arts within the Litchfield and surrounding community?
It’s in the name “Litchfield Area.” We have members from Willmar to Cokato, Paynesville to Cosmos, and of course, Litchfield. The guys love getting together to sing. Community members can count on two major concerts (May and December) plus other events, including our Spaghetti & Song fundraiser each fall.
The Litchfield Area Male Chorus also awards scholarships to local high school singers named to All-State Choir.
The Litchfield Area Male Chorus was established in 1964. What factors contribute to its long running success and active membership?
Look at all of the members who have come and gone over the years. When we celebrated 50 years at our concert last May, a roster of 284 current and past members was listed in the program. There is always an open spot for any man who wants to join. Our only requirements are gender (male) and a passion for singing.
What do audience members experience when they come to a LAMC concert?
Our director, Randy Wilson, refers to concerts as potluck…and you never know what kind of dishes you are going to find. The LAMC music library includes a wide range of genres—especially sacred and spiritual songs, musicals, and American folk music. Most concerts are performed by LAMC alone, but we also look for opportunities to involve guest musicians. In recent years, we held Christmas concerts with the Rainbow Singers, a female chorus in Litchfield.
