Speculative Equivalent by David Hamlow

July 6, 2015 @ 10:00 am - August 6, 2015 @ 5:00 pm

July 6 -August 6, 2015

Public Reception for the Artist: July 8th, 5:30 – 7:30

Speculative Equivalent is a reference to Carl Andre’s, Equivalent VIII and the Freemason concept of the Speculative Builder – a mason building something spiritual rather than physical.  David Hamlow uses the residue of his personal consumption (plastic and cardboard boxes) to consider personal narratives and the ways we connect to one another through the spirit of everyday human endeavors.

David Hamlow received an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Minnesota in 2005. He was awarded Individual Artist Grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board in 2003 and 2009, and a McKnight Foundation/Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Fellowship Grant in 2013. Hamlow has shown his work regionally, nationally and internationally, including Above Is Below at the Minneapolis Institute of Art; Wild Culture, at Gainesville State College, GA; Cashing Out at the Kala Institute, Berkley CA, and 9 x 12 in Budapest, Hungary.

He currently resides, with his wife artist Liz Miller, standard poodles Edward and Gretta, and black cat Madeline, in Good Thunder, Minnesota. Hamlow is the acting Professor of Visual Culture at Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN.

Artist Statement

My work embodies 4 propositions.  1) All human activity is creative labor. 2) All creative activity has a quotidian aspect 3) There is positive and negative energy in all human activity 4) This energy can be addresses and measured through creative objects and processes (drawing, painting, collage, video, sculpture, installation).
