Coptic Binding Demonstration

February 12, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The South Central Artisans will be hosting a demonstration on Coptic book binding to be given by Ellen Starr.

Date: Thursday 2/12/15

Time: 6 pm – 9 pm

Place: Hutchinson Center for the Arts

Coptic binding or Coptic sewing is a method of bookbinding employed by early Christians in Egypt, the Copts, and was used from as early as the 2nd century AD to the 11th century.

Coptic bindings, the first true codices, are characterized by one or more sections of parchment, papyrus, or paper sewn through their folds, and attached to each other with chain stitch linkings across the spine, rather than to the thongs or cords running across the spine that characterize modern bindings. This stitch resembles the chain stitching used in embroidery.  This form of bookbinding is very easy to learn.  It is very versatile, the covers for the book can be all kinds of materials.  There is no charge for this demonstration but for those who wish to participate, wood panels and paper will be available for a $10 material charge.  If you have a different cover idea for your book, please bring it along and we can see if it will work (thick felted material works wonderfully)!
