The Artist’s Story
During a third grade Christmas gift exchange on a dreary December day in 1963, I received a tray of watercolor paints and a brush. Delighted, I put them to immediate use. I returned home from school that day with a paper bag containing my paints and a terse note from my teacher. Due to the terrible mess I had made, I was not allowed to bring my watercolor paints back to school. Ever. This, I sincerely hope, was the low point in my career as a watercolorist.
I graduated from Saint John’s University in 1978 with a degree in Art. Though I had the opportunity to study watercolor with the very talented watercolorist Bela Petheo, the callow youth that I was focused instead on printmaking and drawing. My drawings, however, employed a technique using colored pencil applied to paper and dissolved with a solvent such as mineral spirits to create soft wash-like effects and the end result very much resembled watercolor. In the fall of 1981, tired of the unpleasant solvent odor and concerned about the long term effect the solvent would have on the paper, I purchased a dime-store tray of watercolors like the gift I had received so many years before and began a love affair with watercolor that has only deepened over the years.
The paintings displayed here are a sampling from the last 24 years and are a record of the joy I find when observing the visual world around me. It is my hope that I can in some small way inspire you to discover and indulge your own Appetite for Joy.
