About the Artists of Minnesota(formerly Minnesota Rural Artists Association)
The University of Minnesota sponsored its first annual Rural Art Show in January, 1959. The purpose of this initial show was to promote the active participation in the arts by persons living in the rural areas of the state. The show, a part of the annual Farm and Home Show, was held at the University’s agricultural campus in St. Paul.
The show was a great success, and as a natural outgrowth of the enthusiastic participation, an independent organization was formed to provide continued support among this group of artists. Twenty-four artists attended the initial meeting in 1960, and the group was formally incorporated in February, 1963, as the Minnesota Rural Artists Association (MRAA).
The word “rural” in the name depicted the early audience, many of whom were interested in art, primarily in the non-professional aspects. The name of the group was changed, in 1961, to Artists of Minnesota, in order to better depict the image of the group, which had and continues to enjoy the interest and participation by artists at the professional level as well as those with all levels of expertise, including beginners.
Currently, Artists of Minnesota (AofM) meets two times each year. The Annual Show continues since the inception of the group. It is a non-juried show, including categories representing different mediums and levels of expertise. Also included are art demonstrations, awards banquet, and a critique by show judge. The Fall Meeting is a one-day event with an artist demonstration, business meeting and professional critique of member’s artwork.
