The next Open Mic Night will be June 22 at 7 p.m. at the arts center at 28 Main St. North, downtown Hutch, led by Stacy Halter.

Watercolor Class for Kids

Watercolor artist Joyce Young will teach a beginner watercolor class Saturday, April 21, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the arts center. Cost per student is only $15. The object of the lesson is to encourage students to enhance their appreciation for art, learn from an experienced instructor, experience techniques unique to watercolor and common to many art mediums and become aware of resources available in the field. Joyce will introduce use of supplies that are necessary and materials that can be gathered or purchased. She will select pertinent subject matter to demonstrate techniques. While seeking individual progress, students will see positive aspects in all levels of achievement. Attention is rewarded with fun learning, new experiences and the ability to use the lesson beyond the art class to broader projects and home activities.

1. Masterclass with Dr. Thornton from St. Benedicts/St. John’s Universities on Sunday, April 15, 2 pm at the Hutchinson Middle School Choir Room.

A masterclass is where students—in this case CRAYO wind students—will be performing pieces for Dr. Thornton. He will then critique them, offering encouraging words of what was done well and then suggesting techniques they might want to try to improve the piece and their skills. Dr. Thornton would also talk to the group observing—which we hope would be you and your middle school-teen—enlightening—and probably entertaining —everyone. The class will take an hour.

2. Dr. Thornton’s performance with the Crow River Area Youth Orchestra on Sunday, April 22 4:00 PM at the Hutchinson Middle School Gym.

Dr, Thornton will be performing two pieces on clarinet with the orchestra: Heysar Bulgar, a lively klezmer (Jewish dance) piece and Sentimental Mood, a soothing jazz standard, both arranged for the orchestra by Dr. Thornton. They both will demonstrate awesome skills on this instrument. Again, it is hoped this will inspire your child with possibilities.

While there will be tickets to purchase, your child’s music teacher will be sent student passes so they can get in free to the concert! ($3 value) Adult tickets are $7 and for the family it’s $15.
