Student art shows
Art is the HeART of Education!
ShamROCK with the HCA in March!
Students are invited to show their work at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts in February and March. Work will be accepted in all mediums – drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and fiber arts.
This is a juried show – work will be judged by professional artists and ribbons will be awarded at each grade level.
The show is open to all students in McLeod County, from public and private schools and homeschooled children are encouraged to participate.
“This is an opportunity for children to have their work displayed in a public art gallery to boost their confidence in developing their art skills,” said Kathy Wnoroski, director of the HCA.
Art is the HeART of Education is the theme for the elementary school art show that begins Feb. 15 and runs through March 3. Students in grades K through 5 are invited to submit work for this show. Entry deadline is Feb. 13.
Art ROCKS is the theme for the show for students in grades 6-12 who are invited to show their artwork March 5-30. While work will be accepted in any subject matter, a cash prize will be awarded for the best artwork in the the rock ‘n roll genre. Entry deadline is Feb. 29.
No pre-registration required and there is no entry fee. Just bring artwork to the Hutchinson Center for the Arts, 28 Main St. N., downtown Hutchinson, Monday through Thursday, 2 to 6 p.m. and Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. through the Feb. 13. All entries must have students name, address, phone number and parent’s email attached to back of work. Each student may submit up to three pieces of original work.

Intro to Oil Painting Class
Learn the basics of oil painting in a two day class by local artist Jutta Karin Schultz. This two night class on Feb. 21 and 23 will be held in the evenings. The first night students will learn about brush styles, canvas, palettes, and oil paints. Students will also learn the basic elements of composition, subject ideas and color theory. On the second night students will get the opportunity to paint a small painting on canvasboard. The instructor will provide the canvasboard but students will need to bring brushes, oil paint and two GLASS jars with covers that seal for paint thinner. Students should bring the following paint colors: Cadmium Yellow Pale, Ultramarine Blue, Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White, Paynes Grey and either Van Dyke Brown or Raw Umber.

Glass Class
Learn the basics of working with glass in a Mosaic Garden Stone glass class at the Hutchinson Center for the Arts, Saturday, March 17. In this class you will embellish a cement garden stone with stained glass to display in a yard, garden or walking path. You may use your own design or take design ideas from the instructor that have really looked great in the past. Students will be cutting and nipping glass for their projects. We will complete the application of the glass in class and the instructor will give you materials and directions to finish at home a week later. Garden stones may be left outside during the winter months. Glasses or safety glasses required. All material for the project are included in the class fee of $49. For ages 16 to 100. Teens and tweens can take the class with an adult for one class fee.

Watercolor Class for Kids
Watercolor artist Joyce Young will teach a beginner watercolor class for children, Saturday, April 21, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the arts center. Cost per student is only $15. The object of the lesson is to encourage students to enhance their appreciation for art, learn from an experienced instructor, experience techniques unique to watercolor and common to many art mediums and become aware of resources available in the field. Joyce will introduce use of supplies that are necessary and materials that can be gathered or purchased. She will select pertinent subject matter to demonstrate techniques. While seeking individual progress, students will see positive aspects in all levels of achievement. Attention is rewarded with fun learning, new experiences and the ability to use the lesson beyond the art class to broader projects and home activities.
